Tinsel Edwards

Tinsel Edwards

Tinsel Edwards is predominantly a painter but also works with found objects and reclaimed materials, collage, wood and ceramics.

Sculptural details disrupt the surfaces of her paintings. She creates wall-based assemblage pieces incorporating painting and three-dimensional elements.

There is a focus on play and humour, a celebration of the imagination and a fascination with the surreality of the everyday. The work is informed by her life as a mother, a woman and an artist – her memories, experiences and politics naturally emerge in her creations.

Tinsel’s paintings address wider social issues and themes of motherhood, feminism and domesticity from an autobiographical perspective. The work engages with women artists, who were excluded from the Western art historical canon. Quoted imagery, gestures and techniques are interwoven with references to Tinsel’s family home environment, providing a vehicle for her playful exploration of paint and materials.

Tinsel Edwards lives and works in Glasgow (b.1979, Midlands UK). She received her Fine Art BA from Goldsmiths College London in 2001. She has exhibited across the UK and internationally, her work is held in private collections. Solo shows include ‘Holding On’ at Saltspace (Glasgow, 2023), ‘Femme Maison’ at Subversion Gallery (Glasgow, 2022). Group shows/art fairs include Graham Crowley’s Silent Disco 24 (Suffolk 2024), Art on a Postcard for International Women’s Day (London, 2022), The Art Car Boot Fair (London/Margate, 2019), Banksy’s Dismaland (Weston-super-Mare, 2015), Moniker Art Fair with Jealous Gallery (London, 2014), Michaela Stock Gallery (Vienna/Austria 2013), and The Arsenal Gallery (Poznan/Poland 2010).

Tinsel was also in punk/glam/rock group The Fairies Band (2000-2007) and collaborated with friend Twinkle Troughton to create street based performance artworks (2010-2019). She was co-founder and director of A-side B-side Gallery and Studios in Hackney (2012-2016). Tinsel has recently received a grant from the Creative Scotland Open Fund to develop her expanded painting practice during 24-25. She completed the Mentoring Course at Leith School of Art (22-23) and One Day Painting Course (21-22) for which she was awarded a bursary and the annual painting prize in 2022.
