Gus Rushin

Since graduating in 2022 from the Glasgow School of Art with a BA Hons in Sculpture and Environmental Art, Gus Rushin has continued his investigation into our relationship to the flora around us;

Most recently completing a residency in Italy: Sulo: La zona Critica at NAHR studio, Sottochiesa. Exploring how the process of printing tree rings can immerse the community within the ecosystem directly around them. In the past Gus has worked with organisations around Glasgow such as GalGael and The City Councils Arbour team to commemorate the ash trees being felled across the city due to ash dieback.

Tree’s narratives stretch further than our own expectations of our mortality. I encourage engagement with their narratives and vivacious lives. I hope to recover trees from loss and extinction by archiving their grain; this process of materialising allows the memory of the tree to be read. Trees are a catalyst for community and encourage my work to imbed itself within working groups. Through working with wood I seek to form a more intimate understanding of the materials qualities and propensity to change. My work is a celebration of trees born from my passion for them.
