Glasgow Sculpture Studios has invited internationally acclaimed Canadian artist Gareth Moore to undertake a Production Residency at GSS in the Spring of 2014. The residency, from January – April 2014, will result in an exhibition of new work in the GSS gallery and external spaces in GSS’ surrounding environment from 4 April – 7 June 2014, coinciding with the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art.

This will be the artist’s first major project in Scotland borne out of a direct engagement with the city of Glasgow. Moore works in the form of wry performances and complex ephemeral sculptures that blur the lines between art and life. He typically pushes against the established and conventional frameworks of presentation and reception of art. Humble exercises in economics, his works subversively examine habits of consumerism and the concept of recycling. His objects and installations are usually fashioned out of unorthodox or discarded materials. He collaborates with people and places from a non-art perspective in an attempt to relate art to that of everyday occurrences.

His year-long project, Uncertain Pilgrimage, saw Moore travel across North America and Europe, engaging with various skilled workers learning and engaging with their respective crafts. His most recent projects include a site-specific outdoor installation for Documenta13, where he transformed a section of Karlsruhe Park into a living installation made up of different sculptures and areas including a live-in cabin for the artist. In May 2012 International Project Space, Birmingham presented his project Children’s Films, where Moore had invited five international artists to produce short 16mm films specifically for children. The project bypassed the usual ways in which children engage with the work of contemporary artists (through gallery education programmes), and engaged directly with them on their own terms. These projects highlight Moore’s enduring interest in ideas around and connecting to museology, display, social engagement and economic exchange.

While in Glasgow Moore will spend one week, from 21-28 February, at Sweeney’s Bothy, the new edition to The Bothy Project family based on the Isle of Eigg.  This short residency aims to compliment his production residency here at Glasgow Sculpture Studios.
